Product Introduction

Levoplant is a long-acting reversible sustained-release contraceptive implant inserted subcutaneously in women. It consists of two drug-containing silastic rods, each containing 75 mg levonorgestrel, totaling 150 mg. After insertion, it provides effective contraception for 3–4 years (subject to local registration approval). With an annual contraceptive failure rate of less than 1%, it is one of the most effective contraceptive methods recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Fertility returns rapidly in women of reproductive age after removal.

Mechanism of Action

Levoplant is a fully synthetic progestogen. After implantation in a woman’s upper arm or medial thigh, it continuously and slowly releases levonorgestrel at a low dose to achieve contraception via the following three mechanisms:

  1. It strongly suppresses pituitary gonadotropin secretion, thereby inhibiting ovulation.
  2. It thickens cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration.
  3. It causes endometrial atrophy, which prevents implantation of the fertilized ovum.

Levoplant provides effective contraception for 3–4 years (subject to local registration approval). The silastic rods must be removed upon expiry. Women of reproductive age can rapidly regain fertility after removal. If contraception is still required, the original implant set should be removed before a new set is inserted.
